Bob Braine

Artist, lives in Athens, New York, USA.

"Landscape is now the site of deeply conflicting ideas about the natural world and our relationship to it. It is the consequences of this relationship which I document in my practice. The work is site specific - moving over the map on foot, by car, bicycle or boat, the vehicle functions as an extension of vision. Using photography, sattelite images, maps and home made boats the fringe areas and edge habitats where the greatest amount of interaction takes place are documented and catalogued. In my photographs I’m depicting the tangled spot where the perfect design of nature collides with the clumsey arrangements of twentieth century man."

"Two Waters is a unique chronicle of Brooklyn Artist Bob Braine’s waterborne wanderings in and around Hamburg and New York. Undertaking his Journeys in various small craft of his own manufacture Braine examines the urban waterscape through photographs, drawings and writing with a view towards illuminating the edges where humans and nature collide. - What emerges is not merely a document of environmental decay but a poetic account of the state of urban nature in the late Holocene era."
